Synopsis
The painting Mountainscape in the Fuji Art Museum, Tokyo, harbors several mysteries that art historical research has only marginally addressed to date. Even if the provenance can be traced very well, questions about the artist and the original appearance of the work remain unanswered. Albrecht Altdorfer has been considered as a potential author, but there are also parallels to the work of Leonardo da Vinci and Albrecht Dürer, which suggests that it was created in northern Italy or southern Germany. It is the fusion of stylistic elements from both regions that manifests itself in the painting and brings it to life as a testimony to cis- and trans-alpine art transfer.
