Synopsis
The demolition of the Villa Albrecher-Leskoschek, built in 1937 and located at Hilmteichstrasse 24 in Graz represents a painful loss of a significant building. Designed by Herbert Eichholzer, the villa was a Gesamtkunstwerk (syntheses of the arts), notably housing the mural Allegory of Friends by Axl Leskoschek. This mural served as a manifesto of resistance against National Socialism. The project at the University of Graz in collaboration with the Styrian Hospitals (KAGes) offers innovative approaches to monument preservation. This initiative explores innovative approaches to heritage preservation by integrating salvaged elements of the villa and artistic references into the new radiology building. The new structure combines the historical cultural heritage with contemporary modern art, while the Eichholzer Room a.o. evokes the original architecture and political symbolism of the villa. The project deliberately avoids reconstructing what was lost, focusing instead on transformation and the contextualization of past and present. It serves as an exemplary case of how cultural heritage and art of resistance can be innovatively preserved and made accessible for future generations.
