Synopsis
Even in an area of high culture such as the museum, there are always unnecessary tensions between individual specialisms: Feelings of competition and envy can make objective and constructive discussion impossible. On the one hand, the causes of conflict have grown historically and hierarchically; on the other hand, the prevailing framework conditions are the reason for unproductive disputes. A lack of mutual acceptance of competences, an unwillingness to engage in discussion and an incorrect understanding of leadership have led to sometimes disastrous results on objects and persons involved over the last two centuries. In times of increasingly tight budgets, cultural institutions cannot afford an energy-sapping, demotivating environment: clear, binding definitions of responsibilities are necessary in order to work at a high, scientifically sound level and ensure the psychosocial health of employees.
