The present volume is the first in a series that provides an introductory treatment of central topics in linguistics. Its aim is to offer students and individuals interested in the phenomenon of language an (additional) opportunity to independently engage with fundamental aspects of the subject matter.
The first part examines language in relation to the general objects of this world. It addresses the question of which phenomena exist in the universe in order to gain clarity about how language relates to them.
The second part deals with language from the perspective of its evolution. Here, the focus is on how human language develops, what makes it special, and how it differs from the communication systems of other living beings on this planet.
