Is depression the companion of the modern individual? Does it predominantly affect the – female – youth? And what role does neoliberalism play in this? The literary-sociological consideration of three novels by young German-speaking female authors allows to get to the bottom of the phenomenon of depressive millennials. The multitude of opportunities offered by the modern, globalised and digital world seems overwhelming and at the same time turns out to be deceptive. The labour market is saturated, individual commitment to the point of self-exploitation seems to be the only way to success. The social premise of self-realisation determines young lives – a lonely, silent struggle full of shame and fear of failure, which leads to isolation and depression.
